Adapting Your Job Search in a “Stuck” Hiring Market

By Alexandra Cross on

January is typically the time for job opportunities. However, between business uncertainty, higher costs, and AI’s evolving impact on roles, we’re kicking off the new year with a slow, cautious job market.

While that can feel discouraging if you’re on the job hunt, it doesn’t mean you should stop looking altogether. It simply means the approach that works best right now may look a little different than it did a year or two ago.

Here’s what you can do right now:

Create an action plan. Before you even begin your job search, outline your target roles, preferred industries/companies, and realistic next steps so your search stays focused and intentional.

Consider contract roles. Contract and full-time jobs are often pulled from different budgets, so even for companies on a hiring freeze, many are still hiring contract and freelance talent so that their work and current staff don’t suffer.

Company over title. Job titles can vary wildly across organizations, and roles evolve quickly. Identify companies you want to work for first. In this climate, getting your foot in the door of a preferred company may be more beneficial down the line than prioritizing a title.

Expand your skill set. Now is the time to invest in yourself. Take a course, attend an online training. Identify the skills and/or certifications most mentioned in relevant job postings and focus on building those.

While hiring may be slower than usual, it isn’t at a standstill. An intentional, adaptable approach to your job search will help you stay competitive, consider the opportunities available now, and be prepared for the ones coming next. Have questions or want to learn more? Reach out.
