Landing a Job in Q4

By Mary Truslow on

Q4 is often seen as a tough time of year for job seekers. Many candidates put their search on hold, thinking that more opportunities will arise after January 1.

But for companies looking to finalize headcount and budget before the end of the year, Q4 is their time to bring on new talent. Many open roles are “fill them or lose them,” so job seekers are better served to continue their search vs. hitting pause until the new year.

Here are a few tips to help you land that end-of-year role:

Know what you’re looking for.

Q4 hires move quickly, so know what roles you’re aiming for- experience level, industry and expertise. Be clear on your strengths and experience and use that criteria as you search. The quicker you define what you want and what you can do, the quicker your value will be understood by a hiring company.

Less is more.

It might seem like applying to as many jobs as possible will lead to more opportunities, but that’s not always the case. Find your niche and create a list of companies and roles that you’re interested in and hone your search that way.

Keep in touch.

Stay connected with past opportunities. Keep an eye on companies you previously applied to and were considered for. Check their jobs page and reconnect with the recruiter you spoke with to see if there are any end-of-year openings.

Time is of the essence.

The best time is always now. If a recruiter gets in touch, don’t wait to connect. Many job seekers stall to prepare or get advice, but a timely response will only help you. The candidate pool is deep, and waiting could cause you to miss your opportunity. Always follow up ASAP.

While an end-of-year hire isn’t a guarantee, there are jobs to be found in Q4 if you know how to look. Want to talk? Reach out.
